Why didn't our mothers and grandmothers and great-grandmothers tell us what battle it was we lost, or never fought, so that we would understand how total was our defeat, and that religion and madness and frigidity were how we mourned it?
Why were our mothers so silent about rape and incest and prostitution and their own lack of pleasure? Why, when they had so many words, did they not name our heroines for us, tell us about feminists and suffragettes and Amazons and great mothers? --- Phyllis Chesler, Women and Madness
We need to find the words to make ourselves intelligible to one another. Because silence is deafening. Because silence and ignorance have been used to keep women from taking charge of their own lives. Ever since the time of the witch hunts, where well educated women were burned at the stake, the control of information and access to information had determined who gets to be empowered or not.
With this comes WEDPRO's passion for educating women. Education is one of WEDPRO's tool for advocacy and empowerment. It provides a counter-hegemonic tool for the ubiquitous forces of patriarchy. A competent education campaign also goes hand in hand with competent research and the means for getting this message across. That is why WEDPRO has published numerous books on the lives of women.
Education is our tool against the silences, ignorance and disinformation which have oppressed us. It is clasping hands and hearts and heads and coming together in solidarity to learn and love in a community that nurtures freedom that enables a free-flowing exchange of ideas and knowledge.
